Statistical Simulation as a Key Tool for Sustainable Fisheries Management
M. Cousido Rocha, M. G. Pennino, S. Cerviño
The overexploitation of fish stocks is a global concern, with many marine populations currently subject to unsustainable fishing pressure. In this context, the assessment of fishery resources, using statistical and mathematical models as fundamental tools, plays a central role in supporting sustainable management. A key challenge in evaluating management measures is the impossibility of conducting controlled experiments. Consequently, statistical simulation becomes a powerful tool, enabling the construction of digital twins of marine populations. Within this virtual framework, alternative management strategies can be evaluated against predefined objectives (e.g., minimizing the risk of overexploitation), allowing the identification of suitable strategies for implementation in the real world. In this talk, this approach, known as Management Strategy Evaluation (MSE), is described from a statistical perspective, and an illustrative example is presented.
